The 20 best drivers in the world leave Asia and head to the Circuit of the Americas. This race will be especially important for Ferrari because Lewis Hamilton has the potential to become the champion at COTA Sunday. Hamilton needs a win with Vettel finishing 6th or lower, or a second place victory for Hamilton with Vettel 9th or lower. A finish for Hamilton outside of the top 2 will leave the title up for grabs, although it would take nearly a miracle or complete sabotage of the Mercedes garage.
Additionally, the Constructor’s Championship is almost certainly wrapped up as Mercedes needs to leave Austin with at least a 129 point lead. They currently stand above Ferrari by 145. Yes, that means that even with a Ferrari 1-2 finish, Mercedes could still secure the Constructor’s Cup (with a 3-4 finish).
Also on the radar as we head west is a 50% chance of rain for race day. We’ll be packing our ponchos.
