Malaysia Race Weekend

The grid heads to Sepang on September 29 for the 2017 Malaysian Grand Prix weekend at the Sepang International Circuit.

Sepang brought highs and lows to the front runners in 2016. A first lap collision between Sebastian Vettel and Nico Rosberg sent Rosberg to the back of the grid and resulted in an early exit for Vettel, along with a 3-place grid penalty in the following race in Japan. Lewis Hamilton, while leading the race, suffered an engine failure on lap 40, handing Daniel Ricciardo the lead and the race win. Max Verstappen came in second for Red Bull’s first 1-2 since Brazil in 2013. Rosberg rounded out the podium, having fought from the back in a race that dealt a huge blow to Hamilton‘s aspirations for a fourth championship trophy.

The track is mostly favorable to Mercedes’ long-wheelbase chassis, with 9 corners having been re-profiled before last year’s race. Negative camber was introduced to those corners, emphasizing mechanical grip rather than aerodynamic. Ferrari looks to bounce back after Singapore where the Italian team suffered its first double-DNF since 2015. Meanwhile, speculation is still abound at the moment whether or not Carlos Sainz will be driving a Renault on Sunday. Stay tuned for this and more here at F1merica.
